From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Chesterfield were promoted into League One without playing yesterday after Wycombe Wanderers drew at Torquay.

The result confirmed a place in the top three for the Spireites. The Derbyshire club, who were last in the third tier four years ago, have built their success on the basis of their form at their new £13m b2net Stadium where they have won 15 of 21 matches, and the 37-goal partnership of late-developer Craig Davies and veteran Jack Lester.

The title will follow for John Sheridan’s team if they take four points from matches at Oxford today, and at home to Bury on Monday. Bury moved within four points of promotion themselves after defeating Lincoln City 1-0 with a 56thminute header from defender Tom Lees, his second in three games.

Wycombe were fortunate to even take a point from Plainmoor, but if the result maintained their five-point advantage over the Gulls it left the door open for Shrewsbury Town to overtake Wanderers with victory at Hereford today. Stevenage’s promotion prospects were dented when their eight-match unbeaten run came to an end at Southend.

In League One Huddersfield went second with a 3-1 win at MK Dons. Scott Arfield, who also missed a penalty, opened the scoring for Huddersfield with a long-range shot. Lee Peltier then doubled the lead before Danny Cadamarteri sealed victory. Mathias Doumbe scored a consolation for MK Dons. Huddersfield’s position was further strengthened by Peterborough’s defeat at Leyton Orient.

In the Championship, Crystal Palace and Doncaster played out a 0-0 draw that keeps both teams hovering just above the relegation zone. Scunthorpe remain three points from safety after their 1-1 draw at Coventry.

Who's up and down

League One

*Brighton & Hove Albion have been promoted to the Championship.
