Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A last-minute own-goal by Steve Davies handed Blackburn Rovers a point against Blackpool in a fiery Lancashire derby that ended with both sides reduced to 10 men.

An early penalty for the hosts converted by Tom Ince was cancelled out by Jordan Rhodes' spot-kick before Dan Gosling's long-range effort gave Blackpool a first-half lead. But the clash was marred late on when DJ Campbell, the former Blackpool striker, and Jack Robinson both saw red after a major fracas in the penalty area involving all the outfield players.

The brawl was sparked by Campbell's heavy challenge on goalkeeper Matt Gilks which provoked an angry reaction from Robinson. "DJ was entitled to go for it but it's the reaction of the Blackpool players after that caused two players to be dismissed," said Blackburn's manager Gary Bowyer.

Novak's Ram raid

Derby County's manager Steve McClaren was denied a hat-trick of wins as Birmingham City stole a point with a 1-1 draw at Pride Park.

Jamie Ward scored his third goal in a week to give Derby a first-half lead but Lee Novak volleyed past Lee Grant, the Derby goalkeeper, in the 66th minute to level.

Nugent sends Foxes second

David Nugent and Jamie Vardy scored the goals that gave Leicester City a 2-1 win over Bournemouth at the King Power Stadium.

Nugent claimed his eighth goal of the season with a clinical finish in the 17th minute and Vardy struck in the 64th minute.

In between, Marc Pugh scored a spectacular 38th-minute goal for the visitors but Leicester were good value for their sixth successive home League win that lifted them to second.

Huddersfield's trusty Stead

Huddersfield's manager Mark Robins refused to let talk of a training-ground bust-up between Adam Clayton and Martin Paterson overshadow his side's 3-2 derby win against Leeds.

Both players were left out of Huddersfield's squad following reports of a fight between them in training on Friday.

But after Jon Stead's second-half winner clinched his side's first win in six League games, Robins said: "There's bits and pieces happening in training up and down the country every day. It's great to be sat here winning the game because those decisions are fully vindicated."

Stead upstaged Leeds' new loan signing Dexter Blackstock – who scored to make it 2-2 – with his first goal in his second spell for his hometown club.

Leeds' striker Matt Smith headed the visitors ahead before Huddersfield's winger Danny Ward smashed a 10th-minute equaliser and Tom Lees' own-goal just after the hour-mark gave Huddersfield a 2-1 advantage. "Jon was excellent from start to finish," added Robins.

Trotter rescues Millwall

Reading missed out on two points when they allowed 10-man Millwall to equalise in the second minute of injury time and claim a 1-1 draw at the Madejski Stadium.

Nigel Adkins' side went ahead early on through Sean Morrison's header but, after Millwall's Jimmy Abdou had been sent-off for a second yellow card, Liam Trotter equalised from the penalty spot.

Clough off to a flier

Nigel Clough made a dream start to his tenure at Sheffield United with a 3-1 home success against Crewe. The former Derby manager celebrated two headers from Harry Maguire and Ryan Flynn's third after 55 minutes.
