Following this victory for Gary Johnson's men, however, courtesy of goals from Dele Adebola and the defender Jamie McCombe, another set of images will be put on to a chart in the changing rooms that has been used to depict the eight wins required from the Championship leaders' final 13 games.
With a win over Colchester and this one, two have been chalked off. The same process proved a success last season as Johnson led his men out of League One.
"That is one of maybe 10 or 12 things that we do," said Johnson. "They like these little targets and they react the way I want them to. You cannot be top of the league without having a group of competitors at whatever we do, whether we are playing table tennis or working out in the gym. They have real ambition."
Adebola scored his third goal since arriving in January, capitalising on a mistake from Neil Clement to lash the ball in on 14 minutes. Hull equalised on half-time through an own-goal by Liam Fontaine. The winning goal came from McCombe's overhead kick a minute after the interval.
"We have a very happy dressing room but we have some big games to go and we cannot get carried away with the result," said Adebola. "We are really looking forward to [tomorrow's] Charlton game because it gives a chance to put distance between them and ourselves."
