From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Your support makes all the difference.Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier ran into the stand and confronted a supporter who was abusing him after Spurs’ shock FA Cup penalty shootout defeat by Norwich City on Wednesday evening.
Dier was about to walk down the tunnel when he appeared to see his brother arguing with a fan in the lower west stand. Footage then shows the 26-year-old running into the crowd and clambering over several seats before an altercation with the abusive supporter.
The fan in question appeared to run away with Dier held back by stewards. Both the Football Association and Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed they are investigating the incident.
Asked about it in his post-match press conference, Spurs manager Jose Mourinho said: “I think the fans were with the team until the last penalty kick that we missed.
“The people who tease in these privileged positions, in this area of the tunnel, of course, some are Tottenham fans, but sometimes I think a lot of corporation, invitation, a lot of people with some special status, and probably is the place of the stadium where I have sometimes doubt they are the real, real Tottenham fan.
“Because these ones support the boys until the final whistle. This person insulted Eric, his family was there, the young brother was not happy with the situation and then Eric, I repeat did what we professionals cannot do, but it’s something that probably you would do.
“I know the reaction of Eric was based on his brother, he didn’t like what was happening there.”
