Mauricio Pochettino hailed the best atmosphere of his time at White Hart Lane after Tottenham Hotspur beat Newcastle United 4-0 to reach the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup.

Spurs have struggled at home this season, losing four Premier League games here already, but they produced what Pochettino called their best performance of his tenure on Wednesday night to overturn Alan Pardew’s Newcastle.

“It is fantastic,” Pochettino said afterwards. “It was a very good performance from the team. I’m very happy because tonight was the first time we had this atmosphere. This relationship with the team and the supporters was brilliant, I enjoyed it a lot.”

Tottenham’s best performances have been away this season but in this game they produced what Pochettino demands from his players and he was delighted with it.

“Maybe it was the best performance since I’ve been here,” Pochettino said. “In some games we have played very well but this result is very important for us because it’s at home in front of our supporters.”

“It was very important for us, we needed this victory and this performance for our supporters. Our players needed to feel this atmosphere and confidence.”

While Spurs have the good fortune of a semi-final draw with Sheffield United, Pochettino refused to talk of Wembley. “We need to have a full respect for Sheffield United,” he said. “It is a team from League One but they deserve to stay in the semi-final. We watched the game yesterday and they fully deserved to stay in the semi final.”

“We need to deserve to go to Wembley and win both games, home and away. We need to play the games. You never win the games before you play them.”
