From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

John Heitinga came back from beyond the Everton fringe to help them win them an FA Cup fourth-round tie they hardly deserved.

The versatile Dutch defender, voted player of the year by the club's supporters last season, has slipped rapidly down the pecking order at Goodison Park.

He has been caught out by a couple of his pacier opponents and has been linked with a possible move to Fenerbahce in Turkey.

But after his sweet volley in time added on beat unlucky Bolton 2-1 at the Reebok Stadium, Heitinga's manager, David Moyes, hinted that he might still have a role at the club.

"I can't afford him to go," said Moyes. "We're short of central defenders."

Brian McDermott hopes this will be the year Reading reach the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1927.

Reading made it to the last 16 of the prestigious competition with a straightforward 4-0 win over League One's Sheffield United on Saturday.

McDermott has taken the Berkshire club to the quarter-finals on two occasions since he took over, but he said: "There's a buzz around the place. If we can win another game we're in the quarter finals – and we've been there before and we'll try and go one further again."
