From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Either Michael Owen has developed the ability to see into the future, or the former professional footballer turned co-commentator has not quite grasped how to schedule Twitter messages.
The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester United striker was on hand at Brunton Park for BT Sport’s live coverage of the FA Cup fourth round clash between Carlisle United and Everton.
While the ex-England international is often panned for his style of commentary, he was instead ridiculed for sending a tweet advertising the game – over 10 minutes after the match had finished.
Posting on his official Twitter account at 3.36pm, Owen said: “Great buzz up here in Carlisle. I'm certain there will be goals in this. KO at 1:30pm on BT Sports 2.”
Of course, Owen was correct given Everton triumphed 3-0, but that did not stop Twitter users enjoying a laugh at the 36-year-old’s social media mistake.
One user named @KopiteLuke1892 took the plaudits for the best reply, as he wrote: “You bored yourself to sleep so much you missed the match, Mike?”
At least Owen, who regularly comes under fire on social media for his match analysis, made the right prediction, even if it was over two hours late.
