Manchester City were disappointed not to score a 10th goal in their 9-0 victory against League One Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, said Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Zinchenko, who scored their fourth, admits his teammates were determined to inflict further misery on their opponents and record Manchester City’s biggest ever win.

The Etihad crowd, who had witnessed Kevin De Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus, Zinchenko, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker help put eight past Burton, came to life in the 83rd minute when Riyad Mahrez scored the ninth of the night and equalled City’s biggest ever win.

Suddenly there was a greater sense of urgency from the City players and an edge from the stands that prompted Burton goalkeeper Brad Collins to waste time for the first occasion in the match.

Nicolas Otamendi’s saved header from close-range was the closest Pep Guardiola’s side got to making it double-figures, and Zinchenko admitted there was a bit of disappointment about not scoring one more.

“It’s the first time I’ve played in a win like this,” he said. “To be fair we scored a lot of goals, we wanted more, and our fans did too. We wished we could get 10, maybe next time.”

Zinchenko’s goal was a fortuitous cross that curled beyond Collins and into the far corner, whether he intended to score or not was confirmed when he celebrated with his arms stretched as if he was apologising for what he did.

“Was my goal a cross?! A little respect please,” he confirmed. “At half time Pep said keep going in the same way, the same spirit and if we can score more.”

Jesus left with the match ball having scored four goals and said that his side played with respect against their lower-league opposition.

“I have never scored four before in my career, I am so happy for this,” he said. “We played very well and with respect, that’s important.

“Players like me want to play more, to help the team, and we went out there to win.”
