Manchester City defeated Liverpool on penalties in the Community Shield as the Premier League and Champions League kingpins renewed hostilities ahead of the new season.

Raheem Sterling opened the scoring against his former side after 12 minutes courtesy of a cute flick from David Silva and an uncharacteristically flapping attempted save from Alisson.

Liverpool turned the tide in the second half and poured on the pressure as both Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk hit the woodwork, before Joel Matip finally found the equaliser with a short-range header with little over 10 minutes to play.

The match became increasingly frenetic as it drifted towards penalties with a shouting match between Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp on the touchline after Kevin De Bruyne became City’s second injury casualty of the match.

Claudio Bravo saved Gigi Wijnaldum’s penalty early on in the shootout with City’s players holding their nerve as Gabriel Jesus converted the match-winning kick.
