Although they were heroes in the red of Manchester United, the likes of David Beckham, Andy Cole and Teddy Sheringham struggled to make any kind of impact on the pitch, although they were warmly received by the 75,000 inside the ground.
Looking at some of the major players sold by Manchester United since the turn of the century, few have managed to make return to the ground and make a major impact.
In fact, the only player to score and be on the winning side was the one player Manchester United would have been desperate to keep – Cristiano Ronaldo.
