Manchester City retained their Carabao Cup title after beating Chelsea 4-3 on penalties following a dull 0-0 draw across 120 minutes.

It was a match low on action and high-quality football as both sides struggled to break one another down throughout normal and extra time.

Sergio Aguero had the ball in the back of the net at the start of the second half but his effort was ruled out for offside. N’Golo Kante later came close to breaking the deadlock but saw his close-range strike sail over the bar.

After a flat 90 minutes, the match proceeded to an additional 30 minutes of football, ending in a remarkable row between Kepa Arrizabalaga and Maurizio Sarri as the young goalkeeper refused to be subbed off despite being injured.

With Kepa remaining in goal, it was Manchester City who went on to clinch victory as Raheem Sterling struck the winning penalty.
