Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Jermain Defoe and Younes Kaboul have been ruled out of Tottenham's Uefa Cup match against Aalborg at White Hart Lane tonight. Defoe has a cold and Kaboul a groin injury, and they join Ledley King (knee), Benoit Assou-Ekotto (knee), Ricardo Rocha (ankle) and Anthony Gardner (ankle) on the sidelines. Gareth Bale returned from a foot injury to play against West Ham at the weekend and had no adverse reaction. The manager Sergio Ramos has no definite time-frame for King's return. "We need experience and leadership," Ramos said. "The team is very young so we need somebody to take responsibility and cope with the pressure we're under."

Bolton could give Stelios start tonight
Stelios Giannakopoulos could be handed a rare first-team chance as Bolton resume their European campaign against Aris Salonika at the Reebok tonight. The Greek midfielder has started one Carling Cup game this season and is desperate to impress new manager, Gary Megson. "If you ask any player in the world if they are happy when they are not playing they will say no," he said. "But it is up to me to turn it around. I am settled here and I have no problems." Megson has no new injury concerns but is likely to shuffle the line-up with one eye already on next weekend.
