Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. After scoring his first Arsenal goal of the season in the 2-1 victory at Marseilles on Wednesday night, Theo Walcott has promised there will be a lot more to come in this campaign.
The 24-year-old's sweetly struck volley opened the scoring at the Stade Velodrome, after he capitalised on an error from Marseilles defender Jeremy Morel. The England international is now back on the right-wing after a brief spell down the middle, and finished last season as Arsenal’s top scorer in all competitions with 21 goals.
"The cross came in and the full back missed it," Walcott told arsenal.com. "It felt like the ball was in the air for a decade and I managed to keep my eye on it and [it was] pure technique into the top corner.
"It meant a lot getting off the mark [for the season]. Hopefully there are going to be more to come now. I started pretty late last year and I finished as top goalscorer so it's a good sign. I'm pretty sure of that."
Walcott was proud as the Gunners extended their away winning record to 10 matches, but has challenged the club to show the same level of performance at the Emirates Stadium.
"It just shows how consistent we are away from home," he said. "We just need to be a bit more consistent at home now, that's the next big step. If we show that, we can really go far this season. I really believe that."
Good starter? Walcott’s record after his first seven Arsenal appearances of the season:
2013/14 - 1 goal
2012/13 - 3
2011/12 - 3
2010/11 - 6
2009/10 - 1
2008/09 - 1
2007/08 - 0
2006/07 - 0
