The man, known only as 'Ruben', and his dog Mundo have been homeless on the streets of San Sebastian for three years, and have slept in the doorway of the Anoeta Stadium for the last eight months.
The 35-year-old has now, according to Marca, been employed as part of the Basque club’s ground maintenance team.
“I thought they were such good people,” Ruben told Marca. “After so much time, hope is lost.”
Ruben has agreed an initial two-month contract, which is set to be extended if he impresses while working at Sociedad.
The club’s latest recruit, who previously survived off the generosity of those at the nearby Amara Berri Public College, has already managed to find a room and put a roof over Mundo’s head.
Real Sociedad have made a promising start to the La Liga season and currently sit in seventh place, following a 3-0 win over Alaves on Saturday.
Ruben will have to be on top form as he begins work on the Anoeta Stadium. The next two clubs to visit will be title contenders Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.
