The Brazil midfielder scored from the spot after regular penalty-taker Robert Lewandowski – who had already netted twice – gave the former Liverpool midfielder the opportunity to get his first goal for ‘FC Hollywood’.
Coutinho, who joined the German champions on a season-long loan from Barcelona FC this summer after a frustrating 18 months at the Catalan club, then assisted fellow new arrival Ivan Perisic.
Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus rejected criticism of his team’s mentality after they twice squandered one-goal leads against Eintracht Frankfurt to draw 2-2.
“It makes me furious, your mentality crap every week,” Reus told reporters, when asked whether his team had a mentality problem.
“Really. I mean we were dumb with the 2-2, but please don’t start with this mentality crap.”
Dortmund had a nine-point lead over Bayern Munich midway through last season before imploding after the winter break to see the Bavarians secure a seventh straight league title.
Meanwhile, RB Leipzig stayed top of the table after achieving a 3-0 away win at Werder Bremen.
