Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Michael Owen played down the significance of his fourth goal in four games, and admitted that Real Madrid are still performing below the standards of which they are capable.
The England striker set Real on their way to a 2–0 derby win over Getafe, with a clinical finish from the edge of the area, but it was not until Ronaldo netted a second 12 minutes from time that the points were safe.
In their first–ever league encounter in the Bernabeu, and without an away win all season, 18th–placed Getafe belied their lowly status to dominate possession and create a string of chances which players like Owen and Ronaldo would surely have made more of.
"Of course it was great to score, but that's what I am paid to do," said Owen.
"If I was a midfielder and I scored, well that is more of an event. But I am expected to score goals and at the moment that is what I am doing.
"I have been in these positions before and you just have to enjoy them while you can.
"We didn't play as well as we wanted to tonight but it is another win and, with Barcelona and Valencia dropping points, it obviously moves us higher up the table."
