Liverpool’s European title defence began with a defeat as they were beaten away from home by Napoli on Tuesday night.

In a close game, both goalkeepers had to be at their very best. Alex Meret had a fine game in goal for Napoli and was able to keep Liverpool’s front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane at bay with a string of fine saves, while Adrian did superbly well to deny Dries Mertens with a flying save.

But Mertens made no mistake from the penalty spot after José Callejón was tripped in the penalty box by Andy Robertson.

Liverpool pushed for a late equaliser but, with time running out, they were caught on the counter-attack as former Tottenham striker Fernando Llorente scored his first goal in a Napoli shirt.
