Louis van Gaal succumbed to yet another wretched defeat as his Manchester United side was outclassed by Midtjylland.

The Danish Superliga champions had the measure of their esteemed opponents from the first minute but, even so, it was the away side who took the lead.

Memphis Depay seemed to have wasted a chance on goal when he slipped while waiting for Jesse Lingard's cross to fall to him in the box. The much-maligned winger, however, trapped the loose ball, rose to his feet and tapped home from close range.

The opening goal did nothing to settle United into the game, however, and if anything, Midtjylland responded and began to take the ascendancy.

When Michael Carrick mislaid a pass, the impressive Pione Sisto latched onto the loose ball, evaded several defenders and found Sergio Romero’s bottom-left hand corner from the edge of the box.

The home side maintained the same level of intensity after the break but became particularly dangerous following the introduction of substitute Paul Onuachu.

A header from the Nigerian striker's forced Romero into a brilliant save but the Argentinian 'keeper, a late replacement for the injured David De Gea, could do nothing about the winning goal.

Juan Mata pulled out of a tackle on Onuachu, effectively allowing the Midtjylland striker a free shot on goal. He took it and his team-mates held on.

It will, perhaps, go down as the most famous night in Midtjylland's history to date. It is certainly one of the darkest of Louis van Gaal's tenure.
