Your support makes all the difference.Jürgen Klopp was delighted that his Liverpool side managed to “write history” by recording the club’s biggest-ever European away win after their 7-0 defeat of NK Maribor on Tuesday night.
Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah scored twice each with the additional goals added by Philippe Coutinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Trent Alexander-Arnold at the Stadion Ljudski.
The seven-goal margin bettered 5-0 victories over Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur in 1964, Crusaders in 1976 and FC Haka in 2001, Liverpool’s previous record away wins in Europe.
“I was told about the record after the game and I didn't know about it,” Klopp said. “The wonderful history of this club can feel like a back-pack at times so it is nice to write our own good piece of the history.
“It will be difficult to beat that record. It is quite rare to win 7-0 but it showed we did unbelievably well.
Klopp added: “The boys deserved that, and we really kept on going. The only problem recently was how to explain why we didn't win. That has been the most difficult thing about our recent games.
“When you don't score it is a challenge to stay confident but we will try to use this result now. The next game is Tottenham so it's pretty likely it will not be a similar result. We have five days to recover and prepare and we are looking forward to it.”
Oxlade-Chamberlain’s goal - Liverpool’s sixth of the night, set up selflessly by fellow substitute Daniel Sturridge - confirmed the record win and saw the £35m summer signing from Arsenal open his account for his new club.
Klopp believes the strike will act as a confidence booster for Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has started just once since his arrival at the end of August.
“It will open his chest. It will help him a lot,” Klopp said. “He could have scored two. It was nice from Daniel how he made this goal, really cool.”
