Around 800 fans have travelled to Denmark to cheer on United as they begin their Europa League campaign, having failed to emerge from their Champions League group before Christmas. Despite the busy fixture schedule given United are still in the FA Cup as well as battling for a top four place.
But the news that fans would be charged £71 to attend the match – despite Southampton’s trip to Midtjylland in August earlier in the season costing just £22 – has not gone down well, and a protest is planned for the match to demonstrate their anger at the huge price hike.
Press Association have captured the banner in Herning ahead of the match, with the slogan “Welcome to Scamdinavia” displayed above the prices of the two separate matches against English teams this season.
United manager Louis van Gaal gave his support to the United fans planning on making their feelings clear, as he admitted the price increase was unjustified despite the allure of playing against qa club of the size of United.
“Of course, I support the fans,” Van Gaal said on Wednesday. “It is a big difference from the price of the game against Southampton. It shows you that Manchester United is a big team in this world. In the Netherlands you also have a big difference in prices but this is a lot. I have very much sympathy for the fans.”
