Suarez needed a little fortune with a deflection off Luke Shaw, and after consulting VAR the referee eventually awarded the goal.
From there United seemed to settle into the game and did well to disrupt their visitors, but couldn't get a crucial goal to pull level.
Messi had a relatively quiet game, but his team did enough and will take a lead back to the Nou Camp.
