Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Joe Hart

Early save from Olic and tipped away Alaba drive but was little troubled against understrength Bayern with action at other end. 6/10

Stefan Savic

Robust Montenegrin put in crucial blocks after coming in for calf victim Micah Richards for only his sixth start for the club. Composed. 6

Vincent Kompany

The Belgian captain helped ease Savic in. Displayed usual calmness and dealt with sporadic Bayern attacks well. 7

Joleon Lescott

Headed home from Silva free-kick but effort rightly disallowed for foul on goalkeeper. Stood up well to what little the visitors offered. 6

Gaël Clichy

Held position while also providing extra attacking outlet as he pre-pares for an extended run in team after Kolarov injury. 6

Gareth Barry

Tidy and effective passing. His ball infield began the move for the opener. Forced Butt to punch away 25-yard effort. 7

Samir Nasri

Former Arsenal man began brightly and created header for Aguero. Fired wide before the interval but efforts ultimately in vain. 6

Yaya Touré

Typically imposing, dominant showing from the Ivorian, providing platform for Silva and Nasri to work at Bayern defence. Strode forward for City's second after interval. 8

David Silva

Transferred Premier League form to the European stage. Came in for heavy treatment and stayed down with ankle injury before fine run and finish for City's first. 8

Sergio Aguero

Dallied on chance shortly after Silva's goal, allowing Boateng to get back and clear. Curled wide one effort on half-time. 7

Edin Dzeko

Little joy in the air against Bayern defence but combined superbly with Silva for opener and also created Touré's second. 7

Best off the bench

De Jong (for Dzeko, 77): Brought on to reaffirm City's control of midfield.
