The Wolves not only moved three points clear of nearest rivals Bayern Munich at the top of the table, but also significantly boosted their goal difference following a Edin Dzeko hat-trick and another goal from Brazil hot-shot Grafite.
"We should really have taken the lead ourselves in the first half," claimed Magath.
"With the 1-0 lead after an hour, the game was all but decided in our favour as Hoffenheim then dropped a gear.
"That we were then able to improve our goal difference was of course pleasing."
Meanwhile, Hoffenheim coach Ralf Rangnick has warned that he could quit the club at the end of the season, following his side's collapse in form in recent weeks.
The former Bundesliga title contenders are without a win in their last 12 league games and have tumbled down into mid-table as a consequence.
Rangnick told Bild: "I cannot identify with being average. I am not prepared to accept any further steps backward. We have got to strengthen in six or seven positions.
"I will not think about anything else just as long as I have the feeling that I can take this team further.
"Whether or not I have that feeling, we will have to see over the next six or seven weeks.
"My task was to lead Hoffenheim into the Bundesliga and then I was told that things would really get interesting."
