Luke Shaw will have a scan on Friday as he continues his recovery from the horrific leg break he suffered against PSV Eindhoven in September.

The Manchester United left back has been working hard in the gym on his recovery but has been given four days off this week by Louis van Gaal with the team again set to play the Eredivisie side.

"It is going very good with him but it’s also difficult for him because now the progress is not as much as in the beginning," Van Gaal said ahead of Wednesday night's game.

"Now, sometimes, he is fed up with the situation and I can imagine that. So I give him now, for example, a few days off because I don’t think the memories of PSV are good for him. I wondered if he was fed up because maybe it was the match against PSV and every player has to watch the game in the stadium to support their fellow players.

"So I have given him time off but, on Friday, he has a scan and then we will know more about the injury and how it is going."

Shaw had been arguably the club's best performer in the early stages of the season and was easily enjoying his best run of form since joining the club from Southampton last year.

"Luke Shaw is a very important player," added Van Gaal. "I said in advance that he would be the revelation of this season. Last season was his adaptation season, and he was on his way to doing that.

"I have Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Ashley Young, so I think I can manage that position, but it is still a loss because, in my opinion, he is the best left full-back at Manchester United."
