Jose Mourinho has pointed to the time Cristiano Ronaldo "went up first and failed" during a Champions League penalty shoot-out defeat and that it was "hard to take".

The current Chelsea manager endured a difficult tenure during his time at Real Madrid where he won one La Liga title during his time in charge. But the reign of the Portuguese coach will always be viewed as something of a failure due to his inability to land a Champions League title - the priority following his appointment.

Mourinho took the Spanish club to three consecutive semi-finals but failed to go any further. The closest they came was when they took Bayern Munich to penalties in 2012 but the player who would perhaps be most trusted to bury his spot-kicked failed.

"Winning the Champions twice as coach has made my career a special one," the former Porto boss told TVI24.

"I've been in several semi-finals too and some defeats were especially hard to take, such as the goal that did not exist against Liverpool [during his first Chelsea spell] in 2005 or on penalties in 2012 when our first-choice penalty taker [Ronaldo] went up first and failed."

Mourinho has won Europe's top club competition with Porto and Inter Milan and is this season targeting it with Chelsea. The Blues begin their latest assault on the competition they won in 2012 with a group game against FC Schalke.
