From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Seville's hopes of reaching the final on Spanish soil were dashed as CSKA Moscow progressed into the last eight of the Champions League for the first time since 1993.

CSKA went ahead in the 39th minute when Tomas Necid received the ball on the edge of the area, moved away from his marker and calmly beat Andres Palop in Seville's goal. Diego Perotti equalised in the 41st minute by tapping the ball past Igor Akinfeev after a long pass into the area unbalanced the CSKA defence.

But Palop's misjudgement was costly 10 minutes after the break as he attempted to punch away Keisuke Honda's long free-kick and the ball bounced off his fists into the net, leaving Seville needing two goals to progress. They were never up to it.

"This result is disastrous and all we can do is say sorry to the fans. We had a lot of hopes pinned on this game," said the Seville coach, Manuel Jimenez. "I'm the one who's responsible."

In one of Seville's best chances, Luis Fabiano struck Jesus Navas's cross first time from close range, drawing a fine save from Akinfeev in the third minute. "We had a clear opportunity to break the 0-0 scoreline," Jimenez said. "Normally we score on those kinds of occasions, but Fabiano's shot went straight to the goalkeeper."

The CSKA coach, Leonid Slutsky, said: "After we went ahead we knew that Seville could score at any moment." However Slutsky need not have worried.
