Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Gary Lineker has described Cristiano Ronaldo's reaction to Gareth Bale's first of his double for Real Madrid against Levante last night as "extraordinarily stroppy and "bizarre and unhealthy" for the team.
Instead of going to celebrate with the Welshman, Ronaldo appeared more interested in the fact this his bicycle kick in the build-up to the goal did not go in.
It was Bale's first goal in 10 matches for the Spaniards. He then wheeled away in celebration and even kicked the corner flag in relief as his barren spell ended.
Lineker, who between 1986 and 1989 played for Barcelona, Real opponents in Sunday's El Clasico, wrote on Twitter.
The £86m Bale scored his second in the 40th minute, this time deflecting in a Ronaldo shot.
Ronaldo has been defended by team-mate Sergio Ramos. "It is difficult to be Cristiano and he has been performing at a very high level for a number of years," the defender told the official Madrid website.

"He knows himself better than anyone, he has a very competitive character and we are not worried if he didn't score if Bale subsequently did."
