From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Bayern Munich's victory over Hamburg last night was marred when a pitch invader hit Franck Ribery in the face with a scarf.
During stoppage time of the German Cup second round clash, which Bayern would win 3-1, what appeared to be a Hamburg supporter came onto the field of play.
The invader ignored the rest of the players to run directly towards Ribery who he then swung his scarf at, making contact with the player's face.
Ribery looked to square up to the pitch invader who made offensive hand gestures in the Frenchman's direction before security swooped.
Ribery, who netted Bayern's third goal, had been booed for much of the match but was in relaxed mood after the game despite the incident.
"Fortunately, nothing much happened," he told German television after the match. "It was a difficult situation, I didn't see him coming."
Hamburg said in a statement this morning: "The club distances itself from the alleged 'HSV fan'."
"He was handed over to police. The club has already filed a complaint and will also issue a stadium ban for the man."
Robert Lewandowski and David Alaba scored the first goals for Bayern before Ribery's deflected effort. Pierre-Michel Lasogga scored a late consolation for Hamburg but it was Pep Guardiola's side that advanced in the competition.
