Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

It’s a big game for….

Christian Benteke: With Daniel Sturridge sidelined yet again after picking up a hamstring injury in the defeat to Newcastle, Liverpool will need the Belgian to find form. After a poor performance at St James’ park this game will provide an ideal opportunity for Benteke to regain his eye for goal.

Best stat…

8: Liverpool have only scored 8 goals in the ten games that Benteke has started. In their other 12 games they have scored 24 times.

Remember when…

Adam Lallana opened the scoring at Anfield in the first encounter between the two sides in this year’s competition. The match ended in a 1-1 draw and turned out to be Brendan Rodgers’ last game in charge of Liverpool in European competition.

Player to watch…

Divock Origi: After scoring a hat trick in the 6-1 Capital One cup demolition of Southampton, Origi is a player high on confidence. Sturridge’s injury means that if he can continue his goalscoring form, Origi may feature much more prominently in Jürgen Klopp’s plans.

Past three meetings…

Liverpool 1 (Lallana) FC Sion 1 (Assifuah) Europa League, October 2015

Liverpool 6 (McManaman, Bjørnebye, Barnes, Fowler 2, Berger) FC Sion 3 (Chassot 2, Bonvin) Uefa Cup winners cup, October 1996

FC Sion 1 (Bonvin) Liverpool 2 (Fowler, Barnes) Uefa Cup winners cup, October 1996

Form guide…

FC Sion: DWDLLL

Liverpool: LWWWWL
