Inter had to come from behind against Roma in the Italian Super Cup and the former Barcelona striker, whom Benitez has promised a more central role, responded with a double to ensure a 3-1 victory.
The one-time Liverpool player John Arne Riise scored for Roma, but after Pandev had equalised, Eto'o scored twice in 10 minutes, earning the three-time Champions League-winner his 17th trophy. In the last eight cup finals he has played, Eto'o has been the victor in seven.
Two more former La Liga strikers met in the Bundesliga curtain-raiser between Hamburg and Schalke 04 – Ruud van Nistelrooy's two goals helping Hamburg to win 2-1 over Raul's new team.
Jose Mourinho wants to raid Steve McClaren's Wolfsburg for the striker Edin Dzeko. The Real Madrid coach would happily lose Karim Benzema to secure the Bosnian forward. He was overheard telling Benzema: "You turn up half-asleep at 10am and you are still half-asleep by 11am" in training last week and if Real can move the Frenchman out on loan they could still bid for Dzeko.
