Manchester United's hopes of signing Brazil international Dani Alves are over after it was announced that he had signed a new contract with Barcelona.

The Brazil international had run down his contract at the Nou Camp and had been expected to move on.

He said last month that he felt "disrespected" by the club that he had not been offered new terms earlier.

However, following Saturday night's Champions League triumph, Alves has put those feelings to one side in order to agree a new two-year deal, with the option of a third.

Manchester United will rue the news in the knowledge they would have landed the 'biggest bargain' of the summer if they complete a move for the 32-year-old.

Analysis by the Football Observatory, a research group within the International Centre for Sports Studies, suggests Alves was the best performing out of contract player of the most recent season.
