Your support makes all the difference.Marcos Alonso has been criticised by former Chelsea star Joe Cole and Rio Ferdinand for “letting Frank Lampard down” in the 3-0 thrashing to Bayern Munich by getting himself sent off.
With the Blues outclassed by the Germans in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie, the Spaniard lost his cool.
Alonso clashed with Robert Lewandowski, who assisted both Serge Gnabry goals and scored the third goal on the night.
And after swinging his arm towards the Pole’s face, French referee Clement Turpin initially brandished a yellow card, before changing it to red after consulting the VAR.
“He’s let his manager down there no doubt,” Cole added. ”It looked like [Alonso and Lewandowski] said something to each other so there was a bit of malice, bit of venom.
“He shouldn’t have done that and he’s let the team down.”
While Ferdinand labelled Alonso “silly” given the technology in place now to ensure every incident is captured.
“In today’s game it’s a red for retaliation,” Ferdinand told BT Sport. “Waving arms, it’s silly really [for an] experienced player.
“You can’t be doing that in the game today with cameras all over the place. I thought he was punished deservedly so.”
Jorginho picked up a yellow card to also miss the second leg in Munich through suspension.
The result and mounting absentees for Lampard leaves the Blues with a near-impossible task of reversing the tie at the Allianz Arena.
