From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Shinji Okazaki got one over his former club with a goal on his Mainz debut, helping to defeat Stuttgart 3-2 in the Bundesliga this afternoon.

Nicolai Muller put Mainz in front in the 14th minute, but Vedad Ibisevic replied within two minutes for the guests.

Okazaki then equalled his tally for the whole of last season as a Stuttgart player to put Mainz in front again before Muller got his second of the game.

Martin Harnik reduced the arrears once more, but it was too late for Bruno Labbadia's men to find an equaliser.

In the day's other game, Schalke and Hamburg shared six goals in a rollercoaster 3-3 draw at the Arena AufSchalke.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar gave the home side the lead in the second minute, but a Rafael van der Vaart penalty brought Hamburg level 10 minutes later.

An own goal from Timo Hildebrand gave Hamburg the lead in the 24th minute, but Huntelaar's second of the game on the stroke of half-time brought the Royal Blues back on terms.

Lasse Sobiech put Hamburg in front for the second time early in the second half, but Adam Szalai salvaged Schalke a point in an entertaining encounter.
