Blackburn set a perfect example by Hughes
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Mark Hughes is urging his Blackburn Rovers players to rise to the challenge in Rotterdam tonight, much as he did 15 years ago when he scored both goals, one a superb effort from an acute angle, as Manchester United defeated Barcelona 2-1 to lift the Cup-Winners' Cup in 1991.
The Blackburn manager knows his side need only a point against Feyenoord to guarantee their place in the knockout stages of the Uefa Cup. Blackburn are almost home and dry after victories against Wisla Krakow and Basle in the group stage.
It is little wonder Hughes cannot wait to get going at the De Kuip Stadium. His goals in 1991 proved a pivotal moment not just for United, who went on to dominate the top flight for years, but for English football in general. "To win the competition was a great effort by everyone at the United," he said. "We were flying the flag for English football because we were the first club back in European competition following the Heysel disaster.
"I had a decent day at the office and was fortunate to score a couple of goals in the final," Hughes added. " I now hope one of our guys will grasp the nettle and score against Feyenoord."
Hughes got an insight into their Dutch opponents when he saw them triumph at home against AZ Alkmaar at the weekend. "The fact I have seen Feyenoord at first hand was a great help. It gives me a clear idea of how I will approach it," he said.
