Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The World Cup winner Ronaldo was left dumbstruck by the celebrations which followed Real Madrid's title success - and now his Brazil team-mate Roberto Carlos wants David Beckham to get a taste of that winning feeling.
Beckham, currently in the Far East, is due to be unveiled in Madrid on 2 July following a medical which will complete his £25m move from Manchester United.
Real wrapped up the title just days after the move for the Old Trafford midfielder and England captain was confirmed. The supporters thronged the streets of the Spanish capital and the party went on long into the night. Roberto Carlos said: "The best thing is the crowd that showed up. It was worth it just for the view. It has been beautiful. Let's hope we can celebrate it again next year so that Beckham knows what this is about.
"There were lots of happy people enjoying the title. Ronaldo could not believe his eyes. He asked me 'What is going on?' I told him it was time for him to get used to this type of thing, as we have it every year. It has been similar to the celebration of the World Cup with Brazil. It has been unbelievable.
"There were some people crying out of joy. The important thing is to have people enjoying themselves because this is a historic phase for all the Real family.
"We have finished a fantastic season with three titles out of five. It is a shame the Champions' League slipped out of our hands."
Beckham, meanwhile, is expected to make a brief return to action today when his promotional roadshow reaches the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur. He is expected to play in a five-a-side match against a number of celebrities.
Beckham, who is at present in Thailand, says he is looking forward to the trip. "Not many footballers get the chance to visit Malaysia or much of Asia," he said yesterday. "It's so nice to visit new places and meet new people who have such a wonderful passion for football and winning."
Beckham will move on to Vietnam tomorrow before returning to Thailand where he has spent the last couple of days. The England captain will then return home and start to prepare for his new life in Spain.
