Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

It’s a big game for…

Arjen Robben: After missing all but one of this year’s Champions League group games through injury, Robben finally had the chance to shine against Arsenal, and shine he did; scoring almost instantly as he joined the pitch in the 55th minute. Time will tell whether Guardiola risks starting the fragile wonder, or brings him on as a substitute later on, but expect brilliance in either case.

Weird stat…

1: A single point – a draw, therefore – would automatically put both sides through to the knockout phase, and with it, eliminate Arsenal and Dinamo Zagreb.

1: It also refers to the number of losses each side has picked up this season, with an unbeaten domestic record and single loss in the Champions League apiece. Bayern fell to Arsenal in October, while Olympiakos lost to Bayern in the other half of this fixture.

Remember when…

Müller broke the deadlock: Back in September, an opportunistic Thomas Müller spotted Olympiakos keeper Roberto off his line, and duly lobbed him from outside the 18 yard box. The ball sailed over his head and into the top corner, for a goal as sweet as the yoghurt for which Müller is synonymous.

Player to watch…

Robert Lewandowski: With fourteen goals in the Bundesliga and four in Europe, Lewandowski is helping Bayern steamroll their way through domestic and European affairs with exceptional goal difference. The Bavarians sit on 35 in the German top flight, and ten in the Champions League.
