Bayern didn’t open up David Moyes’ side as often as many people expected at Old Trafford, and the 1-1 scoreline means any win at the Allianz Arena would take United into the semi-final for the first time since 2011.
United followed up that draw with a simple win over Newcastle at the weekend and in what has been a rarity for United this season, go into Wednesday's game with confidence.
Bayern, who had looked formidable this season, have shown there are a few chinks in their armour. After the draw with United they saw their 53-game unbeaten run in the Bundesliga come to an end with a loss to Augsburg.
In their defence a few key players were rested but it was still not the best preparation for the United game. The Germans still remain strong favourites to progress.

Bayern Munich’s defeat to Augsburg on Saturday was their first league loss since October 2012, a run of 53 games.
Bayern are yet to beat an English team at home this season, losing to Manchester City and drawing with Arsenal – however, in both cases the result was enough to see them progress.
Munich have not lost a Champions League knock-out tie over two legs since March 2011, when the went out on away goals to Inter.
Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney has eight assists in this year’s Champions League, more than any other player. However he has only scored twice.
United have the Premier League’s best away record this season, although their only Champions League defeat this season came in the away leg of their tie with Olympiakos
The 16 goals that United have scored in their nine Champions League games is the joint lowest of the quarter-finalists – tied with Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund.

Manchester United were knocked out of the Champions League by a stunning Arjen Robben volley that gave Bayern a vital second away goal. United, 2-1 down from the away leg, raced into a 3-0 lead with goals from Darren Gibson and two from Nani. But just before half-time Ivica Olic pulled one back for Bayern. Then, with United trying to hang on with 10 men after Rafael was dismissed for a second yellow, Robben fired Bayern into the semi-final from a Franck Ribery corner.
