Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Man-for-man marking from Chelsea's 2-1 defeat at the BayArena.

Petr Cech

Won the battle of the headgear enthusiasts over Ballack, by saving his acrobatic efforts superbly. 8/10

Branislav Ivanovic

Switched off for the Leverkusen equaliser, leaving the left midfielder in space to provide an easy assist. 6

David Luiz

Commanding in the air but too eager to play long balls, which were easily repelled throughout. 7

John Terry

Played with calmness and authority, aided by Leverkusen having onlyone striker. 7

Jose Bosingwa

Stifled going forward by playing on the left flank, but stuck admirably to his task in defence. 6

Ramires

Never looked comfortable with the ball at his feet, causing him to frequently lose possession. 6

Frank Lampard

Neat interplay in the first half, but suffered as the midfield were repeatedly bypassed. 6

Raul Meireles

Off the pace of the game, made ill-timed challenges, and his passes rarely found team-mates. 5

Daniel Sturridge

Provided the majority of Chelsea's creativity, including a sublime pass for the opener. 8

Juan Mata

Didn't get into the game from the left-hand side, and was rightly the first man to be withdrawn. 4

Didier Drogba

Offered nothing in the first half, but his touch and strength after the break allowed him to score. 7

Best off the bench

Florent Malouda Nearly added a second with a great bursting run. 6

Alex Not a coincidence they conceded twice once he had come on. 4
