Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Former Bayern Munich captain Stefan Effenberg has challenged Bastian Schweinsteiger to prove his leadership qualities in Saturday's Champions League final against Chelsea.
Effenberg captained Bayern the last time they won the competition in 2001 and he called on Schweinsteiger to rise to the occasion at the Allianz Arena.
"There is a lot of hope resting on his shoulders and he cannot buy any more time - he has got to work now," Effenberg told the Bild newspaper.
"Sooner or later, he has got to be there to lead this team.
"I am keen to see whether he can cope with the pace - he has got to play intelligently."
Effenberg claimed Jupp Heynckes' side, who were beaten to the Bundesliga title and DFB-Pokal by Borussia Dortmund, are too reliant on wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben and are "too predictable".
"It is not good when you are always hoping that Ribery and Robben won't get stopped," he added.
"Given the quality Bayern have, they have got to be able to play other systems too. They are too predictable.
"A win in this game would save their season."
