Former Chelsea defender Filipe Luis has hit out at Barcelona’s Luis Suarez, after a collision between the pair left the Atletico Madrid player with a hole on his foot.

Luis left Chelsea last year to return to Atletico after a disappointing season, and immediately regained his place in Diego Simeone’s starting line-up. But while Simeone’s side have a reputation for utilising a physical approach when facing the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid, it was Luis who felt the wrath of Suarez.

The pair collided in a challenge during Wednesday night’s 1-1 draw between the two sides in La Liga, and Luis took to Instagram to reveal the damage done to his foot by the Uruguay international.

Luis wrote on his Instagram page: “A good job he never touched me.”

However, Luis’s social media revelation triggered an angry response from Suarez, who criticised the Atletico defender for taking to Instagram over the matter. The Barcelona forward said: “Football is for men and these things should be left on the pitch. If everyone did this kind of thing it would be a circus of photographs. Did Messi publish a photo last season? No, the game is for men.”

Suarez was supported, somewhat surprisingly, by Luis’s Atletico teammate Fernando Torres, who explained that these type of things happen through a match and are best left on the pitch once the full-time whistle goes.

“What happens on the pitch should stay there,” Torres said. “There are blows and grabs and kicks but they are part of the game.”
