From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

It’s a big game for…

Isco: Despite being out of favour towards the beginning of the season, Isco has recently gained the trust of manager Zinedine Zidane and it has shown in his performances. The 24-year-old is a strong dribbler of the ball and will likely start in central midfield, in a more attacking role than either Luka Modric or Mateo Kovacic. He will need to be at his best to unlock Atletico’s notoriously strong defence.

Best stat…

Atletico may have improved drastically under manager Diego Simeone, but their record in the derby before he arrived was abysmal to say the least. Los Colchoneros had won just 2 league matches between the rivals in the previous 20 years, coming in the 1988/89 and 1999/2000 seasons.

Since the Argentine became boss, however, Atletico have seven victories to Real’s eight, with five draws in that time as well. The two major losses of course came in the Champions League Finals in 2014 and 2016.

Remember when…

Atletico Madrid were mere seconds away from winning the Champions League in 2014 against their city rivals, before Sergio Ramos popped up to score a crucial equaliser in the dying minutes of injury time.

Atletico looked spent and were no match for Los Blancos in extra time, as Gareth Bale, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo all scored to secure Real’s 10th European Cup.

Player to watch…

Yannick Carrasco: The winger comes into the Madrid derby in brilliant form, having picked up three man of the match awards in his last six matches, as well as gaining the same recognition in Belgium’s recent 1-1 draw with rivals Netherlands.

Carrasco is one of his country’s new generation of talent and, at just 23 years of age, has a long career ahead of him. The Belgian is an attacking midfielder who has added a ruthlessness in front of goal to his repertoire this season, contributing nine goals in all competitions.
