Arsenal lost by an implausible 10-2 aggregate scoreline but Wenger insisted that his side can still “compete” with the German champions despite another bad result.
Wenger did point out, though, that Bayern can “do what they want” in Germany, a reference to their record of signing the best players from their rivals in recent years.
Bayern signed Mario Goetze from Borussia Dortmund in 2013, Robert Lewandowski in 2014 and Mats Hummels in 2016, decimating the team that won two Bundesliga titles under Jurgen Klopp at the start of this decade.
Their financial and sporting dominance of that division Wenger said made life easier for the side now coached by Carlo Ancelotti.
“We can compete with Bayern, we showed that in the first half,” Wenger said. “Overall Bayern is a good team, they do what they want in Germany, what we cannot do in England. Nobody can compete with them. They take the players they want and they are a bit lonely on the market, which is not the case in England.”
Bayern have also spent big on Thiago Alcantara from Barcelona, Javi Martinez from Athletic Bilbao and Douglas Costa from Shakhtar Donetsk in recent years on top of the players they have signed from Dortmund.
