Champions League fans were once again less than receptive to Michael Owen’s commentary during BT Sport’s live coverage of Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain, but at least they weren’t being put through the ordeal of listening to Richard Keys and Andy Gray over on beIN Sports in the Middle East.

The former Sky Sports presenters, who were axed by the broadcasters’ after making a string of sexist comments about lineswoman Sian Massey and their colleagues, have made a new home for themselves on the sport channel, which broadcasts to the Middle East and North Africa as well as certain countries around the world.

They were on hand to present live coverage from Tuesday’s Champions League coverage from the match in Paris, but viewers will have feared the worst when a female presenter appeared on screen to interview David Luiz.

Don’t worry, no jokes were made at her expense, but English viewers were left stumped when the interview was carried out in French – or so we thought.

Luckily, Gray came to the rescue to translate what the presenter and Luiz were saying, and even managed to predict what the former Chelsea defender was going to explain before the footage was cut off, demonstrating not just a bilingual talent but also the ability to see into the future.

Gray revealed that an O-level in French helped him to understand what was being said, but pundit Graeme Souness – sitting between Keys and Gray – suspected something wasn’t quite right with the translation and a smirk began to grow across this face.

The former Liverpool midfielder quickly interrupted Gray before he could go on any further, and hilariously pointed out that both the presenter and Luiz were speaking in Portuguese, not French.

Gray immediately bursts into a roar of laughter despite the mistake, with Souness looking all the more happy for proving his colleague wrong.
