Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Nicholas Harling's daily quest to see a World Cup match: Days Four and Five

The absurd ease at entering France's opening fixture at cost price gave way to a frustrating weekend. Those who expected to walk into the Stade Gerland in Lyons parting with only a few francs to watch Mexico beat South Korea on Saturday were to be sadly disappointed. It was all I could do to persuade a well-to-do Frenchman with a 250fr ticket to come down from 555 to 500fr moments before the start.

Such a price in Toulouse yesterday would have been a bargain indeed. There were so many disconsolate Argentines and Japanese outside the Stade Municipal that the tout demanding 14,000fr for two tickets probably had no need to lower his price. Me? I took to a local bar where I saw the game on television. It was my first failure.
