Turner, one of three partners who bought the club 13 months ago, insisted it was a 'needs must' decision for him to return to the manager's seat, which he used to occupy before becoming chairman. 'I know it's an incredible thing, being both the chief executive and manager - but, whether it be temporary or permanent, someone had to get in and keep the ship afloat,' Turner said.
'I've been told I'm already in the Guinness Book of Records for being the only man ever to play for, captain, manage and be chairman of the same club. Now I must be the first ever to step down from being chairman to become manager.'
Bill Kenwright's consortium is continuing the battle for control of Everton despite suggestions that it might pull out. The Goodison director was upset by recent chants of 'Kenwright out' but the four Manchester businessmen involved in the Kenwright consortium yesterday issued a statement making it clear they intend to continue the fight, against the Tranmere Rovers chairman, Peter Johnson, for a controlling interest held by the family of the late Sir John Moores.
