Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

RUMOURS

Fact and fiction from the Sunday papers

Paul Gascoigne may be playing with Manchester United next season, according to the People, which reports that Brian Kidd, the assistant manager at Old Trafford, has already had talks with the Lazio and England midfielder.

Kidd is said to have visited Gascoigne in Italy last week, only to be spotted by a delegation from Newcastle, which the People rather mysteriously described as being on a "fact-finding tour".

Speculation about Ron Atkinson's next signing - without which no self- respecting Sunday tabloid is complete - attracts interest, with the Sunday Mirror suggesting that he wants Ian Rush, and is willing to offer Peter Ndlovu in part-exchange, while the People reports that a deal worth £500,000 for Arsenal's striker Paul Dickov was on the table before George Graham was sacked as manager and may be resuscitated when the dust settles at Highbury.

Norwich may be the unlikely destination for Newcastle's transfer-seeking midfielder Lee Clark, according to the News of the World, with the same paper suggesting that Joe Royle will make a bid for Aston Villa's Dean Saunders this week.

Performance

of the week

Leicester City, fighting to stave off the threat of relegation, scored three times in the last 13 minutes of their match at Villa Park on Wednesday to force a 4-4 draw with Aston Villa and move off the bottom of the Premiership.

WHINGE OF THE WEEKEND

`What on earth did Chelsea do to deserve three points. We battered them. People tell me you don't need the breaks in football but that's rubbish. Our goalkeeper had nothing to to. We hit the bar, the post and created chances galore. I'm devastated.' Harry Redknapp, the West Ham manager, after defeat to Chelsea.

Quote of the weekend: `He could be the biggest thing here since Dixie Dean. I have never see a player receive as much adulation in such a short time. He's looking pretty cheap at the moment, even at £4m.' Joe Royle, Everton manager, on Duncan Ferguson, who scored his side's winner against Manchester United on Saturday.
