Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

SWANSEA EDGED closer to a third Wembley visit in five years yesterday as they outplayed Scunthorpe at a packed Vetch Field to gain a 1-0 advantage to take into the second leg of their Third Division play-off.

Matthew Bound, the Swan-sea defender, was the hero with a strike one minute before half-time, but the Swans were indebted to their goalkeeper Roger Freestone who, rushing from his line, made vital clearances either side of the break.

Brian Laws' Scunthorpe came out for the second half in determined fashion but failed to capitalise on their territorial dominance. Alex Calvo-Garcia came closest two minutes from full-time when his header smacked against the Swansea goalpost.

John Hollins, the Swansea manager, said: "This was a terrific game of soccer. I felt we looked as if we could score every time we came forward."

In the other play-off match Rotherham will be the more satisfied after holding Leyton Orient to a goalless draw at Brisbane Road in the first leg.
