Football: Sunderland target Dichio
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Sunderland are ready to move in for the former Queen's Park Rangers striker Danny Dichio to reinforce their promotion challenge.
Peter Reid, the First Division club's manager, hopes to sign Dichio to cover for both the prolific Kevin Phillips and Niall Quinn. He is currently on loan at the Italian Serie A strugglers Lecce from Sampdoria, the club he joined last summer for free under the Bosman rule.
The England Under-21 international's move to Italy has not been a success and he would like to come back home. He has already been linked with possible transfers to Wimbledon and Charlton, but Sunderland are now the favourites to sign him. However, they would have to pay compensation to QPR if Dichio does move to the Stadium of Light.
Leicester City's attempt to sign the PAOK Salonika midfielder Theodoros Zagorakis has been put on hold while a dispute over the fee for the Greek international is settled. It seems that two rival agents are both claiming the rights to handle the transfer. The Filbert Street side thought they had agreed a total package worth pounds 2.5m and do not want to pay any more.
Manchester United have denied reports that they are poised to make a bid for the Carlisle United striker, Matt Jansen. The 20-year-old was on trial at Old Trafford last week but has since returned to the Second Division strugglers. Alex Ferguson, the United manager, said: "He's gone back to Carlisle but we'll be keeping an eye on the situation."
David Seaman has refused to rule himself out of contention for England's friendly against Chile at Wembley on 11 February, despite having chipped a bone in his finger.
The Arsenal and England goalkeeper admits that it is likely he will be out of action for between three and four weeks, but he insisted: "I still wouldn't rule out playing in the Chile game. I'm just going to take it week by week."
Billy McNeill, the former Celtic captain and manager, has been appointed football development officer at Hibernian.
