Football: Schwarz signs for Arsenal
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Schwarz took a break from Sweden's World Cup preparations to complete the deal, even though Arsenal's manager, George Graham, is on holiday. Graham had been interested in signing the attacking player ever since he played a part in Benfica's destruction of Arsenal in the European Cup in the 1991-92 season.
The signing showed that Graham had not been put off Swedes by his difficulties with Anders Limpar, the erratic wide player who recently moved on to Everton.
Schwarz is Graham's first acquisition since the Cup-Winners' Cup success over the Italian side, Parma, but there may be more to follow. Arsenal have been linked with Ukrainian- born Sergei Yuran, Schwarz's Benfica team-mate, who will lead Russia's attack in the World Cup this summer. Norwich City's pounds 4m-rated Chris Sutton is another target.
George Burley, the former Ipswich full-back, has been appointed manager of Colchester United, in succession to Roy McDonough. Burley, a former Scottish international, spent five years as Ayr United's manager and has recently been player-coach at Motherwell.
The Wolves manager, Graham Taylor, hopes to learn next week whether he has been successful in his bid to sign the Port Vale midfielder, Ian Taylor. Steve Staunton, the Republic of Ireland international, has signed a new four-year contract at Aston Villa.
Marco van Basten will be called in as a replacement after striker Ruud Gullit's dramatic departure from the Dutch World Cup squad - if he passes a fitness test today on his ankle injury, the Dutch coach, Dick Advocaat, said.
A 7-0 win over Knowsley United at Thorne Colliery ground last night gave Doncaster Belles the women's National Premier league title.
