Football: Roxburgh to rethink
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.ANDY ROXBURGH, the Scotland coach, has had no option but to operate an open-door policy for his squad to face Germany in a friendly international at Ibrox on Wednesday.
With nine of the original squad of 21 players having withdrawn, Roxburgh questioned the importance given to the national team in Scotland. 'What can be done to protect it?' he asked. 'Other countries have so few call-offs I could accurately predict the line-up of almost any European country we might face.'
Six Rangers players who took part in the derby at Celtic Park, Andy Goram, David Robertson, David McPherson, Stuart McCall, Ally McCoist and Ian Durrant, pulled out on Saturday as did Alex McLeish, the the Aberdeen defender. They were joined yesterday by Maurice Malpas (Dundee United) and Paul McStay (Celtic).
The coach responded by bringing in a Dundee United quartet of Alan Main, Jim McInally, Billy McKinlay and Dave Bowman, and the Aberdeen pair, Brian Irvine and Gary Smith.
